First the body is measured using paint thickness gauges, to determine if panels have been repainted or repaired with body filler. It is also a good way of seeing if all the body panels are original or if any have been replaced. If body panels have been replaced, we then look to see if the structure behind the panel has been damaged and repaired. Also if any of the bolts, hindges, windows, seals have been removed, replaced, damaged or if gaskets have shrunk. In some cases the vehicle has been cut or sectioned and rebuilt at important structural points like the roof, floor, frame rails or pillars. The floor, frame, rails and panels are also verified for rust damage and previous repairs.
Here we have an oil leak, an anti-freeze leak and an open C/V boot
The Power and Drivetrain
The engine and transmission are verified for functionality, leaks and performance. All the fluids are verified for correct levels colour and condition. The charge system is verified for amperage, voltage output and battery condition. The cooling system is verified for heating, cooling and leaks including the radiator, water pump, hoses and manifolds. All drive belts and tensioners, timing belts, chains and covers are verified. The exhaust system componants and connections are verified for rust, holes, leaks and correct exhaust colour and smell. Fuel lines and brake lines are verified for corrosion, leaks and damage. Axles, drive shafts, CV, universal joints and differentiels are verified for leaks, wear and damage.

Steering and suspension
The power steering pump, hoses, rack and pinion or steering box are verified for performance and leaks. the tie-rods and ball joints are verified for looseness, play or damage along with the stabalizer bar, links and bushings. The shock absorbers and or struts are verified for condition, performance and leaks. As well as coil and leaf springs for condition and damage. Note some of the steering and suspension componant wear is noticed by noises, reaction and such on the road test.

AWD rea drive inner tire shoulder worn through.
Wheels Tires and Brakes
Wheels are verified for condition, damaged, previous repairs and correct size. Tires are verified for tread depth, wear including uneven alignement, condition and age. Brakes are verified by pad and shoe thickness, disc, drum condition and caliper functionality as well as the parking brake for resistance, lever hight and operation.
Inside the vehicle
Everything inside is verified for operation including windows, locks, defrost for mirrors and windows, wipers, sunroof, electric seats and warmers, carpets for humidity, turn signals , flashers and lights, warning lights and all instruments, odometre and all gauges
The road test
Finally the road test to see if the car accelerates and slows down properly. Check the alignement see if the car pulls left or right. Also to verify the function of the automatic or manual transmission and four wheel drive system, suspension, steering, cruise control. Make sure there is no vibration or pedal pulsation when braking. Also to listen for any drive train noise.
